Beautiful houses from different eras can be found in Monroe and West Monroe. The Garden District in Monroe is an older neighborhood with houses built in the early 20 C. and before. The Biedenharn Museums are here and Forsythe Park. Neville High School, an historic high school which is still in use is just across from Forsythe Park in the middle of the neighborhood. Grace Episcopal Church dating from 1847 is at 4th and Glenmar. Across the levee is another park along on the river with a bike trail and volleyball court and boat dock.
Pictured here are a few of the houses that I walked by this morning with local tour guide Alfy Gallagher. Alfy has lived in this neighorhood most of his life and is a good source of information about the changes in the neighborhood over the last 50 years.
Alfy himself is very interesting. He has been a pilot, flight instructor, alligator hunter, salesman and building contractor among other things. He is also very artistic. He makes walking sticks out of fallen limbs and salvages parts of old buildings and trees to repurpose.
